Summary

Droplets impacting on a surface are key to various applications, but a full understanding of how they spread and retract is lacking. Surfactants added to improve spreading and coverage result in variations of surface tension at timescales beyond conventional measurement methods. The study finds that spreading and retraction of droplets cannot be described by equilibrium surface tension, and "fast" surfactants allow efficient wetting of aqueous solutions on hydrophobic surfaces, while "slow" surfactants decrease or increase surface tension. The findings enable tailoring surfactants for efficient drop deposition or spray application.
