The Tavistock Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) conducted an experimental study in 2011 administering triptorelin (a GnRHa drug) to 44 children with gender dysphoria. This study aimed to implement the Dutch protocol for puberty suppression, which had gained traction after a 1994 Dutch case halted puberty in a 13-year-old girl using GnRHa. The protocol, initially developed for prostate cancer and precocious puberty, was not licensed for gender dysphoria treatment. The experiment followed Dutch clinicians' approach to delay puberty for transgender children below the age of consent. The author argues the study failed to adequately inform children and parents about triptorelin's risks. Preliminary results were more negative than positive, and the single published scientific article using the data contained a fatal statistical flaw. The author concludes that GIDS and University College London either ignored or suppressed negative evidence, meaning the NHS had no justification for adopting the Dutch protocol as national policy in 2014. The Dutch protocol gained UK attention after a 1996 Channel 4 documentary showed girls accessing treatment in the Netherlands at age 13. Campaign groups like GIRES and Mermaids pushed for the protocol, leading some parents to seek medical tourism in the US. By 2008, GIRES criticized UK clinicians as "transphobic," citing risks of unwanted secondary sexual characteristics and suicide.
