The Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum (DKRZ) was founded in 1987 to provide computing power for climate and environmental simulations. Since then, DKRZ has enabled numerous scientific projects, contributing to Germany's standing in climate research. The center's supercomputing resources have evolved over the years, from the CDC Cyber 205 in 1987 to the current HLRE system, which provides a peak performance of 1.5 TeraFlops and hosts over a PetaByte of data. The German contribution to the next IPCC report will require dedicating up to one-third of DKRZ's resources for over a year. The center is also working on the COSMOS Earth System model, which will rely on advanced supercomputers.
