Summary

A new algorithm using topological maps on binary data is proposed, replacing Euclidean distance with binary distance measures to account for possible asymmetries in binary data. The method is illustrated with an example and applied to a chemistry problem, showing its efficiency with high-dimensional binary data. The algorithm uses a self-organizing map with a dedicated cost function, minimizing the cost function to determine the topological order. A hierarchical clustering method using the Tanimoto index is then applied to reduce the number of classes suggested by the topological map.
