Summary

The Buffalo Lupus Project found a high incidence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a predominantly African American community in Buffalo, New York, near a toxic waste Superfund site. The study identified 185 cases of SLE in a population of 74,074, corresponding to a prevalence rate of 160 per 100,000, approximately seven times greater than the general population estimates. The research suggests that chronic exposure to waste from the site may have contributed to the development of SLE, rather than being an acute trigger, with most cases experiencing symptoms and being diagnosed when the site was inactive.
