Summary

Researchers conducted an observation project at the summit of Mt. Fuji to investigate transboundary acid rain. The project, which took place from July 19 to August 25, 2008, aimed to clarify the characteristics of background air pollution and transboundary pollution in Japan. The observation results showed that the pH of cloud water at the summit was lower than that at the foot of the mountain, and the concentration of major inorganic ions was about 1/10 of that at the foot. The results also suggested that air masses with high concentrations of SO2 were transported to the summit from the Asian continent, causing an increase in the concentration of chemical components in cloud water and a decrease in pH.
