Summary

Medium-sized tree, 15-25m high, 20-40cm diameter, with slender spirelike form, becoming spreading with age. Bark thick, ash gray, roughened, and fissured. Leaves fan-shaped, 3-5cm long, 4-8cm wide, in clusters, with fine parallel veins. Twigs stout, gray brown, glabrous. Winter buds flat-conic, smooth, light red brown. Wood light, soft, weak, close-grained. Male and female reproductive structures different, with male catkins short-stalked, pendulous, and female seeds globose, drupelike, orange yellow to green. Native to eastern China, introduced to US, frequently planted in city parks and lawns, hardy in southern Lower Peninsula and western Great Lakes region. Shade tolerant, thrives on well-drained soils. Noted for its ancient lineage, with a documented history of cultivation for nearly 1,000 years, and its distinctive, foul-smelling seeds.
