Summary

The United Nations (UN) Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) initiated a global effort to establish a Geodetic Reference Frame (GRF) with a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015, backed by 53 Member States. This led to the creation of the UN GGIM Subcommittee on Geodesy (SCoG) at its 7th session in 2017.

SCoG, comprising 10 members from Europe and other regions, serves as an intergovernmental platform for cooperation on GRF-related matters. Its primary objectives include:

- Maintaining, sustaining, and enhancing the Global Geodetic Reference Frame.
- Providing geodetic expertise to UN-GGIM and related organizations, particularly concerning Sustainable Development Goals and issues like hazards, environment, peace, security, and economic development.

SCoG collaborates with international bodies such as the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) and the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) to implement the GRF Roadmap. IAG plays a crucial role in developing the science plan for GRF. EUREF, IAG's Reference Frame Sub Commission 1.3a for Europe, is the regional entity ensuring these demands are met at a local level.
