The single channel model has three states: open, closed, and inactivated, with voltage-dependent activation and deactivation, and voltage-independent inactivation from the open state. The cooperative activation model introduces inter-channel cooperativity, where the opening of neighboring channels shifts the single channel activation curve to more hyperpolarized potentials. The model exhibits a step-like activation of the current-voltage relationship, leading to APs with large onset rapidness and a large AP onset span. The model does not exhibit an antagonism between AP onset rapidness and onset variability, allowing a neuronal population to encode rapidly varying signals and suppress responses to slowly varying stimuli.
