Cell phone radio waves are often said to be harmless because they lack the energy to ionize atoms or molecules and damage DNA. However, this assertion is a fallacy. Most known cancer-causing agents are non-ionizing, and they cause cancer through distinct processes, not ionization. The bystander effect and genomic instability have transformed our understanding of radiation biology, showing that direct damage is not required to induce DNA damage in cells. Magnetic fields, including those associated with radio waves, can engender genomic instability, a hallmark of cancer progression. The radical pair mechanism (RPM) explains how low-intensity magnetic fields can alter the spin state of free radicals, making them more available to cause biological damage. This mechanism operates at energy levels much lower than thermal energies and has been successful in explaining the action of the magnetic compass in animals. Experimental evidence supports the role of RPM in magneto-reception, and it is possible that cell phone radio waves could cause cancer through this mechanism.
