Summary

Researchers used the Tropospheric Ultraviolet Model (TUV) with data from the Chemistry-Climate Model Initiative (CCMI-1) to simulate clear-sky ultraviolet index (UVI) values, comparing them to satellite and ground-based measurements, and found relative differences ranging from -5.9% to 10.6%. They then calculated UVI evolution throughout the 21st century for four Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), finding average increases in UVI in the tropical belt and varying changes in mid-latitudes and high latitudes. The study also analyzed the impacts of greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances on UVI, showing that ozone recovery induces a return of mean UVI levels to 1960 values in the Southern Hemisphere, and that aerosol optical depth has a significant influence on UVI levels in the Northern Hemisphere.
