Summary

The Kromme Estuary's natural zooplankton variability has been disrupted due to persistent high salinity levels caused by a large reservoir retaining freshwater. A single release of 2 x 10^6 m^3 of freshwater into the estuary did not significantly change the distribution or abundance of dominant copepod populations, and the water column returned to pre-release conditions within two weeks. The study concludes that a regular base flow and intermittent freshwater releases are necessary to regulate estuarine zooplankton dynamics, and that the current freshwater allocation of <2% of the mean annual runoff is insufficient to support the estuary's ecosystem.
