Summary

Metabolic pathways are series of biochemical reactions used by organisms for substrate assimilation, with different enzymes affecting substrates differently. 13C, a stable carbon isotope, is used to track the flow of carbon in these pathways. Cells are cultivated with labeled or unlabeled carbon, and GC-MS analysis is performed to generate mass spectrums, which are then quantitated using MATLAB to determine the pathway taken by the substrate. Experiments were conducted to analyze the assimilation paths for labeled and unlabeled glucose in E. coli strains, with results indicating the production of labeled ethanol from labeled substrate and the release of CO2 by one strain that can be assimilated by another.
