Summary

The Amazon Waterlily Pavilion at the Botanic Gardens Adelaide features load-bearing glass columns and beams, completed in 2007. The design was inspired by the Amazon Waterlily, with its strong leaves and stunning flowers. The pavilion replaces the original Victoria House, built in 1867, and preserves the heritage-listed lily pond. The use of glass as a primary structural material provides a modern, minimalist, and elegant centrepiece for the gardens. The biological development cycle of the Amazon Waterlily flower influenced the aesthetic design, with pink accents in glass panels, door handles, and steelwork. The pavilion contains around 400 separate glass panels, with steel providing lateral support and supporting part of the sloping side canopy roof. State-of-the-art finite element analysis software was used to analyze every unique panel, reducing the thickness of the roof panels and enabling the client to purchase glass with a self-cleaning coating. The design of glass columns and beams is a unique feature, with a safety factor of 3 and triple-laminated glass to prevent disproportionate collapse.
