Summary

Cassava mosaic disease is caused by a complex of whitefly-transmitted begomoviruses with bipartite genomes consisting of DNA-A and DNA-B. Research on African cassava mosaic virus (ACMV) and East African cassava mosaic Cameroon virus (EACMCV) found that the probabilities of acquiring each segment by whiteflies did not reflect their relative titers in the source plant for ACMV, but did for EACMCV. However, the DNA-A:DNA-B ratios acquired by whiteflies differed from those in the source plant, and the ratios transmitted by the whitefly did not differ from one, which is the ratio expected for the highest probability of transmitting both segments.
