Summary

The 8th Meeting of the Signatory States of the IOSEA MoU discussed the vulnerability of Casuarina-backed sea turtle nesting beaches to erosion. A study investigated the distribution of non-native Casuarina trees on sea turtle nesting beaches in the Indian Ocean and South East Asia region and created an erosion vulnerability score for 50 nesting sites. The study found that 19 out of 50 turtle nesting beaches are backed by Casuarina trees, with 14 being non-native. The results showed that beaches with Casuarina trees have higher erosion vulnerability scores than those without, suggesting that Casuarina trees may not be an effective coastal protection tool. The meeting requested that the report be noted and its implications for marine turtle conservation be considered.
