Summary

Researchers developed a tool to visualize humpback whale song structures, using a Levenshtein distance matrix to represent sequences of units in the songs, allowing for automatic unsupervised selection of different structure levels and monitoring changes in the songs. The tool was tested on 520 minutes of recordings from Brazil and Costa Rica, and successfully identified two levels of structures: songs and themes. A routine was written to automatically separate songs and themes, which could be used for large-scale recordings.
