Summary

In February 2011, Eskrigg Nature Reserve witnessed a resurgence of wildlife activity. Bird sightings included a diverse range of species like blackbirds, blue tits, bramblings, buzzards, and various finches. Notably, the return of little grebes (dabchicks) was observed, after they had left due to the pond freezing over in November. These birds build floating nests and lay 4-6 white eggs that become stained with time.

Mammals spotted included bank voles, foxes, rabbits, roe deer, red squirrels, stoats, weasels, and wood mice. Amphibians like palmate newts were also noted, though one found dead on a jetty raised concerns. Insects showed early activity with a 7-spot ladybird and a previously unrecorded moth species (Dotted Border Agriopis marginaria) spotted.

Plant life began to emerge from dormancy, with reed grass and honeysuckle showing new growth. Hazel catkins were rapidly growing, ready to release pollen. The reserve also hosted the Annual Nut Race in February, raising over £600 for the Trust, thanks to sponsors and volunteers. Maintenance efforts focused on path repairs, and visitor records showed consistent daily averages of 47-57 visitors throughout the month. Weather records indicated increasing temperatures and significant rainfall.
