Summary

The Wood Warbler is a rare passage migrant in Kent, with 26 records of 27 birds since 1980. It was formerly a regular breeder, but its population has declined significantly, with the last confirmed breeding record in 1990. The species is found in suitable woodland, particularly with tall oaks, beeches, and firs, and little undergrowth. Records show that it is most numerous in the west of the county, but its range has become increasingly restricted. The decline is thought to be linked to changes in climate or land-use in its wintering grounds in tropical West Africa. Local records at Folkestone and Hythe show a scarce and declining presence, with most records occurring between late April and early May, and late July to late August.
