Summary

The world's free-flowing rivers are at risk due to the construction of over 3,700 large hydropower dams, threatening the diverse benefits of healthy rivers, including freshwater fisheries, floodplain fields, and biodiversity. Only a third of the world's long rivers remain free-flowing, and the decline in freshwater biodiversity has been shocking, with species populations collapsing by 84% on average over the past 50 years. The report highlights 10 rivers at risk, including the Sepik, Mekong, Irrawaddy, Mara, Kavango, Vjosa, Isel, Vistula, Tapajos, and Upper Paraguay River, and argues that the renewable revolution, with the plunging price of solar and wind generation, has undermined the rationale for harmful hydropower dams. It is now possible to meet global climate and energy goals without damming the world's remaining free-flowing rivers, and a LowCx3 approach could avoid up to 90% of potential hydropower-related river fragmentation.
