Panspermia hypothesis states that life exists throughout the universe and can be transferred between locations through space. The idea has been debated for millennia, with the Greek philosopher Anaxagoras being one of its earliest advocates. The modern theory of Panspermia, also known as Lithopanspermia, proposes that life can be transferred between planets on meteorites. Recent advances in space science research have allowed for experimental testing of the hypothesis, with studies showing that intact rocks can be transferred between planetary bodies in the solar system. Microorganisms such as spores of Bacillus subtilis have been found to be highly resistant to extreme conditions and can survive in space for extended periods. Simulation experiments have also demonstrated that microbes can survive the physical forces associated with ejection from one planet and landing on another. The discovery of potentially habitable environments on satellites of Jupiter and Saturn has expanded the possibility of interplanetary transfer of life in the solar system. Despite ongoing debates, the physical mechanisms of interplanetary transfer of life have been elucidated, and Panspermia has reemerged as a promising field of research.
