K. Wada's study on microscopic observations of cultured pearls at their early formation is reported. The study used Akoya pearl oysters (Pinctada martensii) and inserted a 6mm calcium carbonate nucleus into the gonad. The pearls were observed at various stages after the operation, and the growth of aragonite crystals on the nucleus was examined. The results showed that the growth of aragonite crystals varied depending on the location and time after the operation. The study also found that the conchiolin membrane played a crucial role in the formation of the pearl. The growth patterns of aragonite crystals were observed to be dendritic, prismatic, or step-like, and the crystals were found to be accumulated in a specific pattern. The study provides valuable insights into the early formation of cultured pearls.
