The previous lecture on electrocardiograms (ECGs) discussed that many of the standard values used today are epidemiological, not clinical, and that patients diagnosed with normal ECGs have a high probability of normal heart function and good prognosis. This lecture explores the relationship between resting heart rate, as indicated by ECGs, and prognosis, using ECGs from five individuals: three with no history of cardiovascular disease and two with a history of inferior wall infarction (figures 1-5). The lecturer will focus on the various prognostic information contained in these ECGs, which will be discussed in detail later (p. 437). In diurnal animals like humans, heart rate and blood pressure peak during the day and trough at night, following a circadian rhythm. This rhythm is regulated by the interaction between the master clock in the hypothalamus and peripheral clocks in the cardiovascular system. The autonomic nervous system and hormones also play a role in regulating heart rate and blood pressure.
