O estudo investigou os efeitos do flúor na ultraestrutura das células epiteliais da glândula adrenal, fígado e tireoide de fetos humanos. Os resultados mostraram que os níveis de flúor urinário nos fetos da área endêmica de fluorose foram significativamente maiores do que nos fetos da área não endêmica. A microscopia eletrônica revelou alterações nas células, incluindo redução do número de microvilos, alongamento e desaparecimento dos mesmos, edema mitocondrial, dilatação do retículo endoplasmático rugoso e alterações na membrana nuclear. Os resultados sugerem que o flúor tem efeitos múltiplos na ultraestrutura das células epiteliais, afetando a membrana celular, mitocôndrias, retículo endoplasmático rugoso e membrana nuclear, o que pode levar a danos celulares e alterações fisiológicas.
