They show that existing SNN methods are vulnerable to efficient attacks, despite claims of security. The SNN problem is related to order-preserving encryption (OPE) and is at least as hard, implying that finding the exact encrypted nearest neighbor is impossible in standard security models. To address this, the researchers propose a new method, the secure Voronoi diagram (SVD) method, which asks the server to return a relevant encrypted partition containing the nearest neighbor, allowing for customizable tradeoffs between efficiency and communication cost. The SVD method is as secure as the underlying encryption scheme and is demonstrated to be efficient and scalable through extensive experiments.
