Summary

Researchers examined the relationship between core and peripheral member communications and the success of Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects. They analyzed data from 74 Apache Software Foundation Incubator projects, measuring project success by graduation from the Incubator. The study found that volume of communication is related to project success, but use of inclusive pronouns does not distinguish successful projects. Core members exhibited more contribution and use of inclusive pronouns than peripheral members. The researchers hypothesized that successful projects would have higher volumes of communication, with core members contributing more than peripheral members, and that core members would use more expressions of belonging in their communication.
