Summary

3D to 2D projection involves specifying a view transformation, which is commonly parameterized by the position of the camera, the position of the point to look at, and the vector indicating the "up" direction of the camera. The projection transforms 3D geometry into a 2D image, with the canonical view volume in normalized device coordinates being a cube with X- and Y-coordinates mapped onto the screen and Z being used for depth testing. Orthographic projection projects 3D space to 2D space, preserving size and parallel lines, and is suitable for tile-based games. Perspective projection makes objects appear smaller as they are farther away, with the viewing frustum being a truncated pyramid. The projection matrix for orthographic and perspective projections can be derived and used in various APIs such as Direct3D, XNA, and OpenGL.
