Summary

Researchers propose a novel abstractive summarization method using Elementary Discourse Units (EDUs) as the basic composition unit, arguing that EDUs are more suitable than sentences due to their finer granularity. The method consists of two parts: EDU selection, which extracts informative EDUs and groups them, and EDU fusion, which generates a fluent sentence from the grouped EDUs. A reinforcement learning mechanism is employed to tune the EDU selection process using the EDU fusion results, leading to significant improvement on the CNN/Daily Mail dataset.
