The first "automatic programming" systems emerged, which provided symbolic addresses and decimal numbers, but were costly to use and slowed down the machine. The A-2 compiler and the Laning and Zierler algebraic compiler were notable exceptions. The economics of programming in 1954 also influenced the development of FORTRAN, with programming and debugging accounting for a significant portion of the cost of operating a computer. Backus proposed the FORTRAN project in late 1953, aiming to create a system that could produce efficient programs and reduce the economic burden of programming.
