Researchers present AutoMap, a system that automatically tunes the mapping of tasks to processors and data to memories on distributed and heterogeneous machines, achieving substantial speedups over custom, hand-written mapping strategies with less programmer effort. AutoMap utilizes a novel constrained coordinate-wise descent search algorithm, discovering mappings up to 2.41× faster than custom mappers. The system addresses the mapping problem in a general setting, where there are degrees of freedom in choosing memory for data, and solves the problem of whether tasks should share a co-located collection or incur an extra copy. AutoMap performs a dynamic analysis to ensure the search knows the actual costs of executing tasks and accessing data, and it can be used in an offline search to test many different mappings and return the fastest one found.
