This allows for a novel bilateral filtering acceleration using downsampling in space and intensity, achieving a principled expression of accuracy in terms of bandwidth and sampling. The filter can be expressed as linear convolutions in the augmented space followed by simple nonlinearities, enabling criteria for downsampling key operations and achieving acceleration. The method is more accurate than previous acceleration techniques, processing a 2-megapixel image in less than a second with results visually similar to the exact computation.
