Summary

Acquiring and maintaining lexical entries for machine translation is costly, with estimates of half an hour per entry, and around 40,000 entries needed for a working application. Automated methods are of interest, and the authors have extracted lexical data from dictionaries, terminology databases, and text corpora, and developed strategies for merging and maintaining the data. They used Slot Grammar as the linguistic basis and instantiated data types automatically from lexical databases and hand-built terminology databases, and statistically from aligned text corpora. The TransLexis database enforces consistency and integrity of data, and lexical information is imported and used as-is or manually fleshed out. The authors have extracted around 26,000 to 34,000 entries from various dictionaries and terminology databases, and achieved good word pairs in 65% of cases using statistical methods.
