After 6 months of hacking, the rtl8723au was included into the Linux staging area. The Linux 802.11 stack uses either FullMAC or SoftMAC, with SoftMAC using mac80211 and FullMAC using cfg80211. Realtek hardware and software have various features, including 802.11N+ devices, simple devices with limited firmware assistance, and configurable internal 'paths' for external antennas. The development process involves respinning hardware, copying and hacking drivers, and releasing new drivers, with no multi-device or multi-bus support.
