Summary

XSS attacks are common due to poorly written PHP web applications, and web browsers have developed built-in protection mechanisms, such as XSS filters, to provide rudimentary protection. This paper analyzes two attacks, PHP Array Injection and PHP Array-like Injection, that take advantage of improper management of variables and arrays in PHP code to bypass the XSS Auditor in the WebKit engine. The attacks are presented with concrete examples of poorly written PHP code and constructed attack vectors to bypass the XSS Auditor. The paper also provides proper code writing rules for developers to build secure web applications and patches the XSS Auditor to detect the identified XSS attacks.
