Summary

Researchers from Stanford University and MIT propose the Video Instance Embedding (VIE) framework, which uses deep neural embeddings to learn visual representations from videos without external annotation labels. VIE trains a deep nonlinear embedding on video sequence inputs, capturing the statistical structure inherent in videos by identifying and grouping similar videos together. The framework yields powerful representations for action recognition and single-frame object categorization, substantially improving on the state of the art. A two-pathway model with static and dynamic processing pathways is found to be optimal, and ablation studies highlight the importance of key architecture and loss function choices. The results suggest that deep neural embeddings are a promising approach to unsupervised video learning for various task domains.
