Summary

Edsger Dijkstra introduced the semaphore as a synchronization primitive that can be used as both locks and condition variables. A semaphore is an object with an integer value that can be manipulated with two routines: semwait() and sempost(). The initial value of the semaphore determines its behavior. Semwait() decrements the value of the semaphore by one and waits if the value is negative, while sempost() increments the value of the semaphore by one and wakes one waiting thread if there are any. A binary semaphore, initialized to 1, can be used as a lock by surrounding the critical section with a semwait()/sempost() pair. If the initial value is 1, the first thread to call semwait() will decrement the value to 0 and continue, while subsequent threads will decrement the value to -1 and wait until the first thread calls sempost() and wakes one of the waiting threads.
