Summary

Facebook Messenger's iOS codebase had grown large and complex over time, with multiple generations of engineers contributing to it, making it difficult to improve. The team decided to undertake a complete rewrite, dubbed Project LightSpeed, to make the app smaller and more efficient. Despite the risks, they evaluated the option carefully, building a new codebase and testing it on the Apple Watch and a standalone Messenger Lite iOS product. The rewrite aimed to reduce the app's size from around 120 MB to the smallest possible size while preserving its features, ultimately achieving a 30 MB product.
