Summary

Researchers propose a novel learning approach to improve language models' performance on multi-hop reading comprehension questions, which require compositional, symbolic, and arithmetic reasoning capabilities. The approach involves decomposing complex questions into simpler sub-questions using a trainable question decomposer, and then leveraging a reading comprehension model to predict the answer by concatenating the sub-questions with the original question. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the baseline by 7.2/6.1 absolute F1 points on a hard subset of the DROP dataset, and beats the state-of-the-art model GPT-3 by a large margin.
