Most communication systems for high-performance computing in clusters of workstations are designed for a specific network architecture, but a single "best" solution cannot exist due to varying communication patterns among parallel applications. A novel design method, Application-Oriented System Design, supports constructing runtime systems as configurable components to match application demands. This method has been applied to develop a communication system for a cluster of PCs interconnected with Myrinet, demonstrating its effectiveness.
