Summary

The past decade has seen significant advances in machine learning, particularly deep learning approaches based on artificial neural networks, with improvements in areas such as computer vision, speech recognition, language translation, and natural language understanding. These advances have dramatic implications for many fields, including medicine, quantum chemistry, earthquake prediction, and genomics. The computational demands of machine learning have been driven by Moore's Law, but as we enter the post-Moore's Law era, new approaches to computational devices and circuit design are needed. Machine learning may also be able to help with aspects of the circuit design process, and future directions include developing larger-scale, multi-task models that are sparsely activated and employ dynamic routing.
