Summary

A Delay-Tolerant Network Architecture is proposed for challenged internets, which operate poorly in environments with long delay paths and frequent network partitions, and have severe power or memory constraints. The architecture provides optionally-reliable asynchronous message forwarding, in-network data storage and retransmission, interoperable naming, authenticated forwarding, and a coarse-grained class of service, operating as an overlay above the transport layers of the networks it interconnects. This approach is suggested to achieve interoperability between networks, especially those in extreme environments or with frequent network partitioning, where link-repair approaches and network-specific proxies are insufficient.
