Summary

A novel learning-based framework for fast depth estimation from stereo images is proposed, utilizing dilated convolution, densely connected convolutional modules, compact decoder, and skip connections. The network is shallow but dense, making it fast and accurate. Two additional contributions, non-linear adjustment of depth resolution and introduction of a projection loss, reduce estimation error by up to 20% and 25%. The results show that the proposed network outperforms state-of-the-art methods with an average improvement in accuracy of depth estimation and view synthesis by approximately 45% and 34%, while being 10 times faster.
