Summary

Digital technologies play a complex role in intimate partner violence (IPV) settings, including domestic abuse, stalking, and surveillance. A qualitative study with 40 IPV professionals and 32 survivors in New York City reveals socio-technical challenges stemming from intimate relationships and shared social circles. Both professionals and survivors lack expertise to identify or cope with technology-enabled IPV, and there are insufficient best practices to help them. The study highlights tensions between technology's role in social support and legal procedures, and the need for technologists to consider these complexities when designing interventions to aid victims of abuse.
