Summary

A survey of Grid applications used in scientific research reveals the diversity of Grid traffic, suggesting that it's not just about transferring huge bulks of data and tiny control signals. The survey, which collected 16 individual results, found that 18% of applications are used for particle physics research, 13% for astronomy, and 13% for engineering, among others. The results also show that 13% of applications are deployed over Grids with 10 nodes or less, while 54% are deployed over 100-400 nodes. The survey identified three common dataset sizes: 10 kB, 10 MB, and 100 GB, with 12% of datasets being smaller than 100 kB, 55% being 1-100 MB, and 18% being 10 GB or more. The study aims to understand the network requirements of Grid applications to inform the design of a new networking API, GIN-TONIC, which will improve the performance of network communication across the Grid.
