Researchers from the Institute of Information Theory and Automation and ˇSkoda Auto, a.s. collaborated on a project to refine vehicle position estimation using inertial sensor data during GPS signal outages. The estimation is based on inertial navigation principles, utilizing kinematic relationships and data from vehicle sensors, MEMS sensors, and GPS navigation. A stochastic state-space model with uniformly distributed noise and Bayesian approach are used to estimate the vehicle position. The model utilizes vehicle velocity and azimuth as inputs, which are preprocessed depending on the driving mode. Experiments were conducted on a testing polygon and real roads, with simulated and real GPS signal outages, to verify the position estimation under various conditions.
