Summary

A learning apprentice system for browsing a library of object-oriented software infers a user's search goal from their actions and presents relevant items. The system uses positive inference rules to draw conclusions about the user's interests, but has limitations in handling negative inference, where the user's actions indicate a lack of interest in an item. To address this, the system is modified to include negative inference rules that remove features from the analogue when they prove to be uninteresting, and to assign higher confidence factors to subterms that actually distinguish between method names. The system also uses a two-step process for selecting items to apply operators to, and triggers negative inference when a culminating operation is performed, such as "Used By" or "Implemented By", and is applied to the names of methods that are open but not marked.
