Summary

Persuasive system design (PSD) influences people's attitude, behavior, or decision making, and can improve user engagement and motivation, but its misuse can lead to unethical outcomes, such as disclosing unnecessary information or agreeing to unfavorable terms, negatively impacting users' wellbeing. Concepts like gamification, gamblification, and digital nudging have become prominent, but raise ethical questions as they can impair users' autonomy and lead to unethical decision-making. A systematic literature analysis and 20 interviews were conducted to understand the role of ethics in PSD, and potential propositions for more ethical PSD were derived, shedding light on research gaps.
