The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and power spectrum are tools for analyzing signals from data acquisition devices, allowing for the measurement of frequency content and conversion to real-world units. To perform FFT-based measurement, understanding fundamental issues and computations is necessary. This application note describes basic signal analysis computations, antialiasing and acquisition front ends, using windows correctly, and computations performed on the spectrum. The basic functions for FFT-based signal analysis are the FFT, Power Spectrum, and Cross Power Spectrum, which can be used to create additional measurement functions. The power spectrum returns an array containing the two-sided power spectrum of a time-domain signal, and converting from a two-sided to a single-sided power spectrum involves discarding the second half of the array and multiplying every point except for DC by two. Adjusting frequency resolution and graphing the spectrum depend on the sampling rate and number of points acquired.
