Summary

The separation of concerns is a fundamental principle in software engineering, but crosscutting concerns do not align with hierarchical and block decomposition supported by mainstream programming languages. Feature orientation is a novel programming paradigm that supports the decomposition of crosscutting concerns in a system with a hierarchical block structure. Researchers have studied crosscutting concerns mainly in the context of object orientation, but few have explored the problem in functional programming. This work analyzes the problem of crosscutting concerns in functional programs, proposes two solutions based on feature orientation, and discusses experience with crosscutting concerns in Haskell programs made in two case studies. Traditional programming mechanisms of functional languages, such as functions, algebraic data types, and monads, are not sufficient for implementing crosscutting concerns, leading to code scattering and tangling.
