Summary

This work proposes a social approach for target localization in collective robotics, where robots communicate their estimation of proximity to a target, guiding the navigation of the population. The approach is tested in simulation and validated on a population of real robots, the marXbot, efficiently guiding them towards pre-specified targets while allowing speed modulation. Collective robotics has gained interest due to its wide range of applications, and controlling such systems demands coordination strategies that take advantage of the presence of neighbors. Foraging is a common benchmark problem in collective robotics, where robots navigate, collect items, and deposit them at specific locations, requiring efficient environment exploration and target location finding. Different approaches have been used, including central planning units and self-organization properties, with the latter often achieved by taking inspiration from biology, such as social species of insects.
